2009 Nationals Eligibility

Due to confusion concerning the new eligibility rules for USCA Nationals, approved by the Management Committee in 2008, the new rules will not go into effect until the 2010 Nationals. Furthermore, participation in a 2009 Regional will count toward 2010 Nationals eligibility.

USCA National Croquet Day:

The USCA is still looking for volunteers to oversee National Croquet Day [UTF-8?]– The chairperson would decide on two dates from July 1 to November 30, 2009.  The duties of the chairperson would be to find prizes for the most active club, the club with the most media exposure, most new USCA members signed up on that day, and the most original theme.

Any type of croquet can be played on this day [UTF-8?]– golf croquet, singles, doubles, American or Association rules, or nine-wicket.

Elizabeth Park Croquet Club

On Saturday, June 13, three members of the Elizabeth Park Croquet Club spent an afternoon promoting croquet at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center (next to the Mark Twain House in Hartford.  You don't often see Abe Lincoln with a croquet mallet!

Using a U.S.C.A. tournament approved 9-wicket set, three members of the Elizabeth Park Croquet Club set up a mini croquet court as one of the lawn activities to celebrate Harriett Beecher [UTF-8?]Stowe’s 198th birthday.  [UTF-8?]Stowe’s twin daughters, Hattie and Eliza, would have played the game at Nook Farm with family and friends.  The birthday celebration was part of Connecticut Open House Day, a statewide event designed to increase awareness of [UTF-8?]Connecticut’s rich cultural attractions.  Activities included free or discounted admissions, tours, demonstrations and lectures at close to 200 galleries, museums, theaters, historic houses, tourist attractions and businesses across the state.  Scott, Barbara and Bobbi handed out flyers on the history of croquet with summaries of 6 and 9 wicket rules and court layouts, which directed readers to the U.S.C.A. website for more information.  After a short demonstration on how to hold the mallet and aim for a wicket or [UTF-8?]opponent’s ball, players went out on the court [UTF-8?]“to make [UTF-8?]wickets.”  Competition among parents and siblings was fierce.  Tall grass, a steep slope and enthusiastic two-year olds made for some interesting plays.  The most asked question of the day:  Where can I buy a croquet set?
